I received an interesting call the other day from a husband who really wanted to help his wife get back into shape. As I patiently awaited for the opportunity to ask him some general questions, he pointed out to me three specific details about his spouse: A) That she needed to lose at least 70 lbs. B) That all she really needed was the use of some dumbbells and C) She has never exercised before. Also, pointed out to me that he was very tight with his budget and assumed that a few sessions should do the trick for her.
Now, for the record, I want to make it perfectly clear that I am NOT making this story up. At first, I thought that maybe one of my friends was pulling a prank on me, but, my cell phone should have displayed their name. Not this time. As I continued to listen to what this man was telling me, I became very concerned and at the same time very confused. I knew that he generally wanted to help his wife , but he did not know how to go about it and he needed some help right away. Here are a few facts ( I made sure) I pointed out to him:
FACT #1: Diet and exercise go together. You cannot expect your body to become the "best" by just doing one or the other. You must incorporate both parts of the formula in order to achieve your goal...period.
FACT #2: Goal setting and time frames: There is nothing wrong with setting a goal and having a structured plan into place. But, you cannot expect anyone to do miracles either. A qualified trainer must and should be able to sit down with an individual and discuss with him/her the truth and myths about the fitness training industry. There are never quick "fixes" to anything...especially when it comes to your health. And that brings me to last point:
FACT#3: Health risks and committment: If you went to a physician and he performed some tests on you and determined that you needed to start exercising and eating properly right away or else.....what would you do? Exactly. Don't wait until you get to that point. Age and pre-existing conditions are very important key factors to consider. If your health is at risk and you don't know where to start, please ask from your doctor if he knows any certified personal trainers or search your local community for any information on qualified trainers near your home. The committment you make to start on the road to better health is all up to you .
